The best product to use indoors for carpenter ants is the new Termidor Foam. It can be applied into walls, voids, cracks and other areas where the ants roam. Don't apply this into air ducts, only inside walls, cracks, etc.
I do not recommend applying any pesticide into air ducts - period.
Outdoors, in winter, there are not any good products to use, this is because the ants will be living indoors in warm temps and not going outdoors at all. They can survive on built up food sources during the winter.
When the weather warms up, and the ants are active again and feeding outdoors, use the KM Ant Pro System. The KM Ant Pro with Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait is by far the best product and also very earth friendly. Anything you use to spray outdoors could cause the ants to divide into new colonies. Be extremely careful what you spray for carpenter ants, or any ant for that matter.
Repellent sprays will kill the ants on contact, but others will be repelled by the spray and avoid it. I only recommend non-repellent sprays outdoors for Carpenter Ants because of this. The problem however, is these type of sprays are not designed for overall treatments to lawns, trees, etc. This is why I recommend baiting.
Maxforce Carpenter Ant Bait is good, but does not last more than 3-4 days outdoors. When it gets wet, its not longer effective. Indoors it is OK for use in walls, eaves, attics, and other similar places. Don't just scatter it indoors, it won't work and could be harmful to pets and small children.
