It depends on what insect you are trying to kill. The general application is around 4 teaspoons of Merit diluted in enough water (usually 1-2 gallons of water) to cover 1000 square feet. You can apply this product with a hand pump sprayer and just mix it as you go. So the basic answer for an average lawn (5000 square feet) is to apply 20 teaspoons of Merit 75 in 5-10 gallons of water, whichever you prefer and apply it to the entire 5000 square feet.
