It depends on the species of ant. Most ants will take a food source or bait back to the colony. There it is fed to the immature ants which in turn dissolve it into a liquid. This liquid is then fed to the colony members. Queens in many cases are not always fed the same food that the other colony members eat.
This is a security measure - built in - for colony survival. What usually happens is that the workers and most of the ants die and the Queens and reproductives starve. This is the classic starvation technique that is disquised in many marketing materials as "fed directly to the queens".
Again, it depends on the species of ants.
I would highly recommend to give Advion a try. It's an excellent bait, and is has exceptional bait acceptance by most species of ants. If it doesn't work, let me know.
