We sell professional quality pest and ant control products. The same products used by almost every pest control company in the USA. I do however, have extensive knowledge of "natural" or green based alternative treatments. So I can give you some really good advice on this question.
When it comes to ant control, you do not want to simply kill worker ants. Spraying them with vinegar will repel them and make them wander elsewhere. It could also complicate the infestation, causing the ant colony to divide or "bud" into several new colonies. Ants do this as a means of survival.
I understand the need for green and safer alternatives. However, ant baits are generally safer and also less environmentally impactful that spraying vinegar water. I don't recommend spraying anything for ants indoors.
The best bait product to use indoors on small ants is Dupont Advion Ant Gel. Here is the link - http://www.epestsupply.com/product/35...
Outdoors the best product to use is the KM Ant Pro Ant Bait Stations. This system provides a feeding source for the ants that replaces their natural food sources. It kills all species of ants. Here is the link - http://www.epestsupply.com/antpro.php
On a slightly more toxic scale, but extremely effective, the new Termidor Foam is also labeled for ants, you can easily foam it into walls, cracks and crevices where you find them.

Hope this helps.
