After is has dried there should be very little risk of harm to people or pets. The main thing is to make sure that it is applied according to label directions. If you do this, then the chances of it being in an area where a child can touch it are rather slim.
For small children in the house, a crack and crevice application, and also under and behind furniture are places to treat. Don't spray the baseboards all the way around the room.
If it is roaches you are dealing with, then treating the cabinets and all cracks and crevices is the method of treatment.
