Any kind of snap trap could potentially hurt or injure small animals. The question is whether or not squirrels would even bother with the trap. My opinion is no. Squirrels are generally to shy of traps, especially snap traps.
You could try using a live trap such as the Ketchall, It is generally large enough to trap small - average size rats, but small enough to keep squirrels out.
