Ants are not usually going to feed in direct sunlight. So the answer to your question is usually yes. They need to be placed in areas where ants will normally feed undisturbed. This is usually in cool moist areas under shrubs, decks, trees, etc. Ants will usually not feed in areas of direct sunlight, on rocks, cement, sand, etc. Think like an ant and ask yourself, if I were an ant, where would I prefer to feed? This is always the best way to figure out where to place them.
If you have to place them in direct sunlight, then placing them under something that can provide shade such as an upside down trash can, flower pot, barrel, etc. can sometimes work. Be sure to cut holes in the side to allow the ants to enter.
