The best thing to do is to remove pets and people from the area to be sprayed or treated. If you are treating carpet, then vacuum like crazy and immediately spray the carpet and leave the room until it has dried. If hardwood floors or tile, then vacuum like crazy and spray the edges and not the entire floor.
Vacuuming will agitate the fleas and get them moving around. It will also help to remove flea eggs and other life forms.
Don't vacuum again until you are ready to treat again, which is around 10 days. Then do all of this again.
The trick to controlling fleas is to get ahead of the pupal hatch. When the new adult flea pops out of the pupal casing, there needs to be a fairly fresh dose of chemical. That's why you vacuum first. Agitate the fleas, cause the pupal hatch by vacuuming (vibrations) and then immediately spray.
