Lowes is great for hardware, appliances, etc, but when it comes to help with pests, we are the best source. Thanks for your question about moths.
The most common rug based moths are called "clothes moths". This moth feeds on Kerotin which is a protein found in wool and animal fur. It is also found in human hair. The immature moth larvae, which resemble small caterpillars, eat the fibers contain kerotin, therefore causing much damage if left untreated.
The single best product to use on Antique Wool Rugs is Ultracide. This product is actually designed to kill fleas, but works well on rugs to kill clothes moths, carpet beetles, etc. It also contains an IGR, "Insect Growth Regulator" that interrupts the life cycle of immature pest stages, such as eggs, larvae, pupae, etc.
Simply spray the top of the rug until damp, flip it over, then spray the bottom. Then flip it back over, let dry, then roll it up and place in a protective bag or restack on other treated rugs.
You can also treat carpets, curtains, furniture, etc. Ultracide can be sprayed practically anywhere. It is in an aerosol can that sprays like hairspray. Only it sprays upside down.
Ultracide has a slight Alcohol odor and it dries fast. Its the overall best product to kill carpet beetles, clothes moths, silverfish and other fabric pests. Even though the label directions does not specifically mention these pests, just know that it works, and if it kills fleas, it will kill anything.
ultracide will not cause colors to bleed, it is not water-based, and will not cause shrinkage. It is very safe to apply and works extremely well.
Bug bombs or foggers are usually of little help when controlling moths or carpet beetles. The rug itself has be treated and protected. A fogger just won't do it. Foggers will help to control adult flying moths, but usually, unless the fogger contains an Insect Growth Regulator, it is of little help.
Ultracide is not sold at Hardware Stores. It is a professional quality product. You can get it from us.
