Sounds like carpenter ants or acrobat ants. If it looks like styrofoam it probably is. Acrobat ants love to tunnel through styrofoam. If it looks like wood shavings and the shavings are very coarse, then it could be carpenter ants. We get this report on a regular basis and it's usually acrobat ants. They look like carpenter ants but are smaller. Termidor foam injected into the areas where they are nesting or colonizing will kill them.
