Optigard flex will kill termites on contact. It may or may not kill them in a tree. The problem is that the tree roots can extend many feet into the ground and also away from the trunk. All of the root system is wood, and if there are any dead roots or dead parts of the tree, the termites will have a feast. Treating living trees with any insecticide is a 50/50 shot at getting control. The best you can do is to mix the Optigard in a bucket and saturate the roots. It may take 20-30 gallons of mix in a bucket to saturate the roots. You have to saturate near the trunk and then all the way to outer branches.
Using a baiting system such as Hex Pro Termite Baiting System may render better results since it will control the colony.
