Unfortunately you are probably referring to what are called "powder post beetles". There is nothing you can simply spray on a furniture surface to kill them. The problem is that these beetles go through a life cycle just like a butterfly. Egg, larvea (worm), pupae and adult. When the adults leave the wood and tunnel through the surface, they leave this hole. This is what you are referring to. This hole is only for the adults to exit. Once they leave the wood, the holes is no longer used and is a "dead" hole. Spraying anything into or on this hole is useless. This is because the worms or "larvae" still exit inside the wood. This is the life stage you want to kill. However killing these larvae are difficult, that is because they are deep within the wood. Spraying any chemical on the surface of the wood won't kill them because the chemical won't penetrate stain or varnish.
The only possible way to treat them yourself is to remove the stain, paint or varnish and the apply BoraCare or Totality to the wood. The wood has to be in a "bare" state in order for this to work. In most cases, complete removal of stain or varnish is difficult and time consuming, It then has to be reapplied after treatment.
In most cases, depending on where you live and availability, fumigation of the furniture by a licensed fumigator is recommended. Fumigation is a process of placing the furniture into a closed chamber and then dispursing a gas known as "Vikane" into the chamber. The Vikane penetrates the wood and kills the beetles, larvae, eggs and pupae. It leaves no trace behind and once fumigated, the furniture looks just like it did before. You can't purchase Vikane and do this yourself. It is a RESTRICTED USE pesticide and requires special licensing, permits, etc. to purchase and store.
I have an article on how to kill powder post beetles here - http://www.epestsupply.com/powder-pos...
Hope this helps.
