Hi,
I know I have a rat outside. My dog caught one & dispatched it, in the summer; but hasn't managed to catch the other one as it's much smarter. The rat is outside at the moment, & I want to get it before it decides that inside would be warmer for the winter.
I have tried to use a snap style trap so far. A few times the bait (nut) has gone but the trap has not gone off, and it has gone off once but caught nothing. Today I checked the trap & it had caught & killed a robin, which had me in floods of tears. So now I don't want to use it again.
Unfortunately the rat is in the garden that is the only garden that has been made secure for the dog. The dog is a nosey pooch, who I don't fully trust to fully leave the bait or trap alone. I can try to seperate the garden into two parts, but she may jump the small dividing fence, so I obviously cannot use any poison's or things that will hurt her. Plus I don't want to hurt any more birds. So what trap would be best for my circumstances please?

The best way to trap rats or mice outdoors is to use the Protecta Rodent Bait station with a T Rex Rat Trap placed inside. This way, birds and other small animals are much less likely to gain access to the trap, but at the same time, rats and mice have easy access. I would recommend to use 2-3 of these traps and keep them checked every few days during the winter. I have this around my house and have caught many rats and mice over the years while never having to worry about our 3 small yorkies.... Works great.
