You have 2 options when treating carpenter ants. 1) use the KM Ant Pro ant bait system with Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait. This system is placed outdoors, so the ants do the work, they pick up the bait and take it back to the colony, killing them. This method is the most environmentally friendly.
2) use Termidor foam and inject it into the wall where the ants are nesting. As long as you treat inside the wall, the ants will usually die inside the wall.
I really don't think that the cats will be harmed by eating dead ants, even if the ants are killed from a toxicant. In fact, I think cats are so finicky, they won't even touch the ants.
