I would agree with you on 1 point, glue traps probably would not work. However, traps can and do work, especially the T Rex Rat trap. You just have to use the right type of bait such as the Pro Lure. Secure them with screws to a 2"x4" piece of wood, or a piece of plywood. Check them every other day and replace the bait regularly.
I would recommend to trap them and get rid of them, and then seal the entire area off with hard ware wire or something that the rats can't eat through.
If you can't do this, then the only option is to use EZ Klean Rodent Bait Stations with Contrac rodent bait and keep the bait changed every 30 days.
Since we are getting close to July 4th, get some smokebombs from a fireworks stand and smoke them out. Then shoot them with a pellet gun. I have actually seen this work. Don't laugh too hard.... :-)
