Carpenter ants will not feed indoors in most cases. They feed outdoors where plants, insects and other natural food sources exist. They are not scavengers like cockroaches, and usually will not randomly sample non-select food sources such as gels indoors. Other ants will do this, but not carpenter ants.
My advice is to use an outdoor baiting system such as the Ant Pro system and let the carpenter ants do the work. Indoor baiting with any of the existing baits does not work indoors. This is one of the reasons that Maxforce Carpenter Ant Gel was discontinued a few years ago. It just did not work.
