Dianna, borax may or may not work depending on how it is applied. The problem is that it is a longer term solution, and takes at least 30 days to kill the cockroaches once they are exposed. Borax has to be applied with a crack and crevice duster such as the JT Eaton duster. It has to applied as lightly as dust on your furniture, and in every place or location a cockroach can hide. Using a spoon and tossing Borax or having clumps or piles won't work. The cockroaches will crawl around it.
Home Remedies? Sorry, Borax or Boric Acid is about the only home remedy. Bay leaves, etc, won't work to control german roaches.
There are multiple chemicals that need to be used when german roaches are really bad. Visit our german cockroach page to learn more
The single best product I can recommend is Maxforce FC roach bait. Apply it as tiny "pea" size bait placements along counters, in cabinets, along baseboards, and any where you see cockroaches.
Hope this helps.
