The Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait has a shelf life in an unopened container of about 6 months. This is at room temperature, usually 70 degrees or so. If the ant bait is in a unregulated temperature environment, then it could drastically reduce its life. Extreme cold (freezing) or extreme heat would alter it unattractive to the ants. The chemical in it (DOT) or a form of boric acid, is not affected by temperature, so it would kill the ants if they feed on it.
The problem is that when the bait goes rancid, the ant usually will not feed on it, rendering it useless.
This bait is a food grade bait with no preservatives, or chemicals added to extend its life. Its sort of like a loaf of bread, if you leave it out long enough, mold starts to grow and it goes bad.
My advice is to only use what you need, and then when you need to replace the bait, buy fresh bait. Its not the expensive, and for 3 - 4 months of control, its a bargain.
