I need to know what bait you are talking about, what is the product name? Most baits have a very short life in terms of how long they will last. Usually weeks if unopened and sometimes days once applied. Let me know what bait you are talking about and I can give you more information.

Advance Carpenter Ant contains fish oils (attractant) and corn particles with Abamectin (Soil Fungus) sprayed onto it as the killing agent. Unopened, it has a shelf life of about 1 year. Once applied, it will turn rancid in about 5 days. This bait is designed to attract the ants fast with fish oil, and kill them fast. It contains food type ingredients that just don't last that long. Apply it and hope the ants pick it up quick. WIthin a few days. If it gets wet, it goes bad really fast. However, it is a great product, and the only one of its kind. Carpenter ants are fairly finicky, they won't eat just anything, and they certainly won't eat a bait that is rancid. It has to be something that they prefer over their natural food sources of aphids, plant juices, etc.
Gourmet liquid Ant bait contains a special citrus honey (attractant), as well as other ingredients, purified water and boric acid. It contains no preservatives. This product is also relatively short lived - about 90 days once dispensed into the KM Ant Stations. Unopened, it will last about 6 months. If you open a bottle and it smells like stale beer, its probably not any good. If you have had bottles for more than a year, it is definitely not any good. The best thing to do is to just buy whatever you need and then when you need fresh bait, order more. That way, you are always using fresh bait and getting the best results possible.
