Under most circumstances, spraying the ground surface near the tree will not result in the root system picking up the chemical and contaminating the fruit. If trenches were dug under the fence and a large amount of chemical were dispensed into the trench, and the root system picked the chemical up, then there is a minor chance that contamination could occur. I will tell you that the USDA reports annually on fruit tested in supermarkets, and the chemicals that they find in fruit - some legal and some not legal - would make you not hesitate to eat the peaches.....
