Ant colonies poping up all over my yard. How do I get rid of them? I have sprayed them with Wisdom by Amvac,

I have tried to sppray them but no use. They are a large black ant that likes the sandy soil we have. They dig in the ground and make somewhat large tunnels underground. The colonies can be eight feet across in some areas and are now spreading all over the yard. I have about 2.5 acres and am bordered by woods. They just keep multiplying, now have about ten colonies in the yard. Mostly all where there is good sunshine, considering I have many large oak trees in the yard.

Wisdom Granules? Would not work. Sounds like Harvester Ants. There are only 2 things that will work.

1. KM Ant Pro System. This system utilizes a liquid bait that the ants will feed on and die from. It also provides continual protection against invading ants. The average number of stations per acre is 8. So to treat all the acreage, you will need about 20 stations. This is the most expensive method, but also the best in that it kill ALL species of ants.

2. Bifenthrin. Get the 3/4 gallon. Mix Bifenthrin in a "drip" bucket. To make a drip bucket, get a 5 gallon bucket and make a very small hole on the bottom, near the edge. Fill the bucket with 4-5 gallons of water and 4-5 oz of Bifenthrin and place the bottom of the bucket and the drip hole over the mound entrance. Let it drip into the colony until the bucket is dry. This could take a while.

If you treat all the mounds at the same time, the ants can't get away. This means get 10 buckets and do all the mound entrances at the same time. This is about the only thing that will work. It may need to be done a few times to get control. If the ants show up somewhere else, keep treating with Bifen.

Actually the Wisdom that I put on it was a liquid concentrate. I mixed with water and sprayed all the affected areas. Like you said it seemed to work for a short time but they come back because i evidently don't get them all. I will try the two option's that you gave. Thanks.

I talked with our Amvac rep today (Wisdom Manufacturer) and found out that they do make a Wisdom Concentrate, and it is Bifenthrin.

Broadcast spraying will not work, you need to use it as a mound drench, or use the bucket technique with the drip hole. It is going to take many gallons of mix to do this and get results, but it will work.

Yes, it sounds like harvester ants, and in the far reaches of South Texas, leaf cutter ants. Both of these ants nest in the soil, and the holes lead down into their nests - which can be huge. The only remedy is to use a liquid drench, baits don't work, you have to practically drown the nest. Get 10-15 - 5 gallon pails, mix up the Bifen and use the drip bucket technique.

The other option is the KM Ant Pro System. However, it won't work on leaf cutters.

After a little research i guess i need to be more detailed. These colonies are sometimes several feet across and are not mounds per say but more like areas of swiss cheese. Many hole like entrances in the sand.
