If the ants are under the felt roofing base, and therefore under the shingles, getting rid of them without removing the felt and applying a thorough application of some pesticide such as Termidor, could be hard to do. In this case, the KM Ant Pro Liquid Ant Bait Stations may be the only remedy.
The mistake that many pest control companies make is to "spray" for carpenter ants. Dusting an attic, and spraying anything "repellent" around the ants, can and does usually make them much worse. Here is a reprint of a post I made on this previously -
The simple fix for treating Carpenter ants in walls is to inject Termidor Foam. This will kill the ants in the area, and hopefully not cause the nest to split. This is also the least environmentally friendly, but it will work.
For long term control of Carpenter Ants outdoors, get the KM Ant Pro Liquid Ant Bait Stations. The ants will find the stations and they become a natural food source that will replace the ants already "natural" food sources. This system will not provide immediate control of ants indoors, but will control ants indoors over several months. Outdoors, it kills foraging ants, but also provides a protection "zone" against new invading ant foragers.
Carpenter ants nest in wood. That's why they are called carpenter ants. They can nest under a house, but not usually underground. Usually, their nests are aerial, located several feet off of the ground.
