I hate to tell you this, but if the squirrel ate very much of the bait (they usually won't), it could die. My experience over the years is that squirrels will seldom eat rat bait. They prefer nuts, beans, etc. We feed them whole peanuts and sunflower seeds (unsalted). Give them some additional food and see if they take it.
If the bait box was empty, then it could have already been empty. Watch the squirrel and look for signs of it being lethargic, slow moving, etc. If it is jumping around and acting like a squirrel, then it is probably all right.
