Maxforce Carpenter Ant Gel is not a good outdoor bait. It goes rancid way to fast.
When it goes bad, the ants won't eat it. It is a good indoor bait.
Outdoors, if you want a cheap, practical carpenter ant killer, then consider using Dominion spray. Dominion contains Imidachloprid, the same ingredient as Premise 2 Insecticide. It will kill the ants it contacts and not harm the tree.
The best overall strategy outdoors is to use the KM Ant Pro system. This system will continually feed the ants and kill the ants in the tree, but also provide a feeding source for outdoor foraging ants.
The KM Ant Pro system is also the best system for wildlife preservation. Its a certified organic system.
