Sounds more like carpenter ants. Carpenter ants will toss out what we call "frass" from the chambers that they excavate inside the wood. They don't actually eat the wood, they bore through it to nest inside.
Termites only build "mud" or "earth" tubes. This mud shelter tube is made of dirt and an acid that they secrete to hold it together. The mud shelter tubes of the subterranean termite are very easy to spot. They also sometimes leave a stain where they are built. The acid the termites use to build the tubes will leave a stain on cement and wood.
