Phorid flies, fungus gnats, and other similar flying nuisances are commonly thought to be a drain problem. However, most of the time, these insects are an outdoor problem that finds its way indoors. They can come from drains, but only if they can access the drain pipe and fly through it. If you think drain flies are coming from drains, do this - put clear tape over the drain and leave it in place for a few days. If the flies or gnats stick to the bottom of the tape, then you may have discovered the problem.. But if the tape has no flies, look for another source. Outdoors, drain flies, gnats, phorid flies, etc breed in stagnant water, sludge, grease traps, french drains, etc. Anywhere standing water can be an issue can be a breeding ground for these things.
Control of drain flies, phorid flies, gnats, etc can only come from the treatment of the breeding area. Sometimes this does not involve using any pesticides. Treatment may include cleaning, water flowing, etc to eliminate the stagnant areas. Any kind of pesticide usually only kills the adult fliers. This results in short term limited control. The only real control will come from eliminating the breeding areas where these things exist.
Using drain cleaners of any kind will not kill them. It only reduces the sludge and buildup (if that exists) in the drains. CB 80 - https://www.epestcontrol.com/pest-pro... is an aerosol spray that can be sprayed into the air indoors to kill them. Spray it around windows, sinks, trash cans, etc. It kills them on contact.
Alpine Fly Bait can be used around windows and doors to attract and kill adult fliers - https://www.epestcontrol.com/pest-pro... Simply apply small amounts to the exterior frames and reapply as necessary.
Maxforce Fly Spot Bait is a bait that is mixed with water and sprayed on surfaces - https://www.epestcontrol.com/pest-pro... Simply mix in a small spray bottle and apply to trash dumpsters, cans, exterior walls, around windows, doors etc. The flies will land on it, eat it and die.
Hope this helps.
