Permethrin in general is not the best bedbug control product. It can work to control bed bugs and is the ingredient in many "ready to use" and over the counter products.
In many areas, bed bugs are resistant to permethrin and many of the "synthetic pyrethroids" that are currently on the market.
Professional use products such as JT Eaton's Bed Bug Plus contains pyrethrins, permethrin, and piperonyl butoxide (synergist to make it stronger). This gives both natural and synthetic pyrethrins and a booster shot to make it extremely toxic to bedbugs. Without the PB or natural pyrethrins, it would not be as effective.
Also, many of the newer pro quality products such as Temprid, Transport, Zenprox, etc, are what are called "dual class" insecticides. Basically they mix 2 or more active ingredients from different chemical classes in order to get 2 different modes of killing action.
These products are the best suited for bed bug control, and if you want to keep from spending hundreds of dollars for a professional treatment program, then at least use the same products that they use.
