It could be acrobat ants -
These ants are small, 1/8" and will also destroy wood, although not as aggressively as the carpenter ant. The distinguishing feature on this ant is the heart shaped abdomen.
Both ants only bore into the wood to nest in it. They don't eat it for food. They consume insects, honeydew, aphids, etc. If this isn't the ant you see, then I need to see a sample to identify it. Freeze a few in a plastic bag and send them to me -
