To apply on baseboards, is is necessary to hold the can upright? If so, how can you apply?

Yes, the can is held upright. It is not an upside down aerosol. Apply directly to mattresses, bed frames, baseboards, etc. Use a light sweeping motion and try not to make puddles. A light mist is all that is necessary.
