If the ants are gathering the bait, it will have an effect. Solid baits are not eaten by the worker ants that gather it. The bait is fed to the immature "larvae" stage of the ants. The larvae then digests it, and reguritates it as a liquid for the worker ants to feed on. Worker ants only feed on liquid food sources.
I would suggest to give it more time. Also, don't expect to only bait 1 area and for that to totally eliminate all of the ant colonies around the house. If it is carpenter ants, there could be several colonies, or "scattered" colonies and they are feeding on the bait. This is common.
My question is, are they carpenter ants or some other species of ant? Do you have a picture you can post?
