What are the big black flying insects I am finding in my house? I have never seen them before.

They are at least an inch long and I usually find my cats playing with them. I found one this morning in my bathroom and I sprayed it with hair spray to keep it from flying away so I could kill it.

It could be big black carpenter ants, but I need more information such as where you live, and a picture of the ant. There are about 15,000 species of ants in the US. So it could be almost anything.
