It really depends on the severity of the infestation, the population. For general control, - not many crickets or for prevention, an outdoor spray such as Bifen IT can work well. It provides a fast kill and gives adequate control in most cases. However if the population is severe - thousands of crickets, which happens in many parts of the south in the late summer / early fall, control will not be easy. Its really a timing and frequency thing. The only way to kill crickets is to spray them directly. You can kill the ones you spray. However, once the chemical is dried, crickets will not die as easily if at all. The reason is that crickets have long spiney legs, can hop and can fly. Dried chemical a day or two after you spray will do nothing to them. So the only way to get any control is to spray continually. In some cases - daily if they are bad enough.
