4 KM Ant units is probably enough. The main thing to remember is that you have to place these stations somewhere near the ants outdoors, but not directly in their path.
Indoors, if you know where the ants are - in a door jamb for instance, I sometimes recommend using a dust application such as Timbor Dust, to give a faster kill. This dust is basically injected or "puffed" into the walls, cracks, etc with a small hand duster. Timbor is a non repellent dust that kills the ants too. It just doesn't provide enough protection for the whole house like the KM Ant Pros would.
The dead tree limbs could become another nesting point for the carpenter ants, so using them as a raised planter may not be the best idea. However, if you keep the KM Ant Pros active for long enough outdoors, it will provide control over the entire property.
