That is wishful thinking since flies can detect smells from hundreds of yards away. These bait stations are intended to be used as a outer perimeter "zone" application and to help knock down existing fly infestations. They are effective in situations where flies are a constant problem such as barns, poultry coups, warehouses, etc.
Placing them outside and then firing up the grill and hoping that they won't be around won't work.
Change the bait at least 1 time per month, more often in humid or rainy conditions. The EZ Strike bait station has a lid that opens from the front with a small key. Inside there are 2 removable trays that can be filled with bait. Fairly simply process.
For flies outside around food, we alway took our scraps and placed them some ways away from us. That way the flies would have something that attracted them away from us. No easy fixes for this.
