Carpet beetles are basically a dermistid beetle that eats natural animal fibers such as wool. That is how they get the name carpet beetle. 100 years ago, almost all carpets were made of wool, and they were a huge problem.
Today, almost all carpets are synthethic, and there is no nutritional value in them for "carpet beetles". It is however, somewhat likely that they could fly in through an open window. But the chances of them actually being able to propogate and reproduce and slim.
If you want something to treat the seats with, use UltraCide. It's an aerosol spray that contains a chemical that kills the adults, and also an IGR that is basically a growth hormone to stunt the reproduction. UltraCide has a low odor, dries clear and should not stain if properly applied.
You can always send me samples and I will identify what the insect is and how to control it. Hope this helps.
